Welcome to my mini day/staycation series of 2021 highlighting my UK adventures. These posts will be a quick fire guide so I hope you’re inspired and most importantly, enjoy reading them!
I visited Cambridge in May on the last weekend before indoor dining and activities resumed in England. However many of these activities are relevant for a summer visit to this culturally rich University Town.
The easiest way to get to Cambridge (from London) is via train as the city centre is pedestrian friendly. Trains are quick, frequent and reasonably priced (I found a £8 one way ticket with my railcard!) From the station we got an uber to our first destination and worked our way back to the train station by the end of the day.
Punting – this is a quintessential English activity involving a punt (flat bottomed boat) and a leisurely ride along a River. You can have a guided tour or do it yourself which is chaotic to say the least! We prebooked a guided tour with Let’s Go Punting costing £30 for 2 of us on a shared tour. As the weather was horrible, we ended up with the boat to ourselves!
Guided tours last 45 minutes along the “backs” – because along the River Cam you see the back end of the University Colleges along with the interesting bridges near them.
Bird’s eye view of the city – the perfect place for this is from the Tower of Great St Mary’s which is a University Church. Entry is £6 and after some very steep steps, you get to the viewing platform which has a stunning 360 view over Cambridge!
College Tour – pre 2020 these were a common way to see the grounds of the various colleges and learn about their famous alumni, world changing discoveries etc but these weren’t happening during our trip. So we spontaneous booked onto a tour outside Great St Mary’s Church which took us around the outside of the colleges with the same information.
We started outside King’s College, visited the oldest church, Eagle pub where DNA was announced and the most haunted College in Cambridge!
Eat and Drink – one place you have to check out is the 101 year old Fitzbillies Cafe for their famous Chelsea buns.
We also had lunch at Giggling Squid which is a delicious Thai branch – the tapas lunch menu is heavenly!
We spent the rest of our time in between tours walking around the lovely cobbled streets of the city centre, checking out the Saturday market and finding interesting things unique to the city.
Cambridge is perfect for a day trip – I couldn’t recommend it more. Other places to add to your itinerary depending on weather/what you’re feeling are the botanic garden, the free Fitzwilliam museum, the Round Church and a good old pub lunch!
